Key Projects

  • 1) The project, « Leveraging Additive Manufacturing to Improve Access to Quality Prosthetic and Orthotic Services in Developing Countries », is a transformative initiative and addresses the critical need for affordable, customized prosthetics in resource-constrained settings by harnessing 3D printing and advanced digital technologies. Key milestones include developing a robust 3D reconstruction pipeline, determining scaling factors for CAD software, and refining post-processing techniques for prosthetic design. The project has also fostered capacity building through staff exchanges and collaborations with local prosthesis companies. Focused on below-knee prosthetics, the initiative aims to enhance mobility, reduce costs, and improve quality of life for individuals with limb differences. By integrating cutting-edge technology with community engagement, the project is driving sustainable, inclusive healthcare solutions across Africa, empowering underserved populations and fostering long-term economic and social impact.
  • 2) The project, « Leveraging Metaverse Digital Tools and 4IR Technologies to Enhance TVET Skills Development & Innovation as a Post COVID-19 Resilience Strategy », is a transformative initiative led and addresses the critical skills gap in Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector by integrating metaverse and Industry 4.0 technologies. The project develops a blended learning infrastructure that combines traditional and virtual methods, creating immersive, interactive training experiences. It focuses on equipping TVET instructors and learners with skills in digital tool development, virtual lab creation, and Industry 4.0 technologies, ensuring alignment with industry demands. By leveraging metaverse platforms, the initiative enhances employability, fosters entrepreneurship, and provides scalable, cost-effective solutions for TVET institutions, promoting resilience and innovation in a post-pandemic era.
  • 3) The project, « Leveraging Augmented Reality for Geothermal Resources Exploration in Africa », is a transformative initiative aimed at revolutionizing geothermal exploration in Africa. By integrating Augmented Reality (AR), Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, and the Internet of Things (IoT), the project enhances geothermal resource identification, real-time data sharing, and decision-making through advanced visualization techniques. LARGER-Africa seeks to improve geothermal exploration efficiency, foster innovation, and contribute to sustainable energy development across the continent. This initiative represents a significant step toward leveraging cutting-edge technology for Africa’s energy future, ensuring a more sustainable and efficient approach to geothermal resource utilization, while addressing the continent’s growing energy needs.
